Google announced on Tuesday that it plans to disable AI tools for K-12 students unless administrators explicitly turn them on. The company stated that access to Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search will be entirely off for student accounts. Chris Phillips, Google’s VP of Education, said that Search and AI are deeply integrated.
Schools that choose to restrict AI altogether will no longer be able to access Google Search. Google plans to share specifics with schools in the coming months before the changes roll out. The company is also launching Guided Learning in schools to help students build a deep understanding of problems.
Lawmakers and local leaders criticized the move, with Sen. Bernie Sanders calling it extortion. This policy shift forces schools to choose between full AI integration or a complete loss of Google Search access. Developers and educators building educational tools will need to prepare for stricter data handling requirements in the coming months.
