OpenAI will unify token quotas across its Plus, Pro, and Business subscription tiers for ChatGPT and Codex models. The company plans to share a single pool of tokens for these services, meaning usage on one model will reduce the balance available for the other. This change aims to simplify how users manage their access to different AI tools within the same subscription.

The new system differentiates between complex models and instant chats, as simple instant conversations will not consume the shared quota. OpenAI doubled usage limits for higher-priced plans to accommodate the merger, though heavy users on lower-cost subscriptions may face reduced quality due to quota constraints. Users will be able to view their remaining balances and reset times in the Settings menu after the update.

This move mirrors a previous strategy by Anthropic, which combined its Chat and ‘Cowork’ features into a single quota system. The change affects anyone managing multiple AI workflows and highlights the increasing value of high-volume access. Developers and businesses relying on these tools should review their usage patterns to ensure they remain within the new limits.
