SpaceXSI has reduced the usage limits for Grok Bot following complaints from users that their quotas jumped to 100% over the Halloween weekend. The agentic AI tool, which can browse websites, answer emails, and log into accounts, was restricted after the service’s cost became unsustainable relative to revenue. Elon Musk confirmed the move on X, stating that the expense associated with running the bot had risen beyond what the company could justify.

The decision comes as OpenAI and Anthropic also tighten their flat-rate plans to cope with the high expenses of AI agents. SpaceX’s AI division, Super Intelligence, turned a profit of $431 million in the period, though this was offset by $1.2 billion in one-time costs. Musk previously described Grok Bot as his fastest-growing product, noting that it had reached 800,000 paying users per week in early October.

Developers and enterprise customers relying on Grok Bot for complex tasks will need to adjust to the new restrictions. This trend shows that the economics of running autonomous agents are still challenging for even the largest AI companies. You should monitor your API usage and costs closely, as the industry shifts from unlimited access to more expensive, usage-based pricing models.
